Since the war in Bosnia started in 1992,
a number of old and homeless war victims are living in a school
building in the village of Fakovići near Srebrenica. Their houses were
burned down, and they are too poor to rebuild them. Only a minor part
of the building is used by the local primary school. Until 2005, the
elderly people lived in oversized, run-down classrooms that were
almost impossible to heat. There was no running water or rest rooms in
the building.
Pharos has renovated a part of the
building. Now ten elderly people are living in cosy rooms and share a
bathroom, toilets, a kitchen and a recreation room.
